WAVE makes it easier to create places, in the heart of our churches and communities, where people with and without learning disabilities can enjoy mixing together as equals.
At our coffee mornings the mixed-ability team work together really well and we see customers’ attitudes being changed. “All we do is bring people together. But the more I see people's reactions, I do think we're doing something radical.
Activity
WAVE Church – where adults with and without learning disabilities lead creative and interactive christian worship meetings, growing in faith and friendship together.
WAVE Socials – inclusive events and activities for the local community that are organised and run by a mixed ability team.
Time
Depending on whether there are already mixed-ability links in the community, it will take 8-10 weeks to set up a genuinely inclusive WAVE worship or social group, with mentoring support and practical resources provided.
Cost
Some groups begin with less than £100, particularly when venue space is provided free of charge by a local church. What truly matters is bringing together a strong team, including 1-2 individuals with lived and/or professional experience of learning disability, who are committed to bridging gaps in our communities and creating more inclusive spaces for worship and social connection.
Partnership
Our hope is that mixed-ability worship spaces will become examples for other groups in the community to follow. This has been the case in Muswell Hill, where WAVE Church led to the start of WAVE café, which is now a thriving community hub.
Support
Through WAVE in a Box – our online hub with tips, resources and guidance on creating mixed-ability places – we support others who are motivated to start inclusive initiatives in their own church or community to do so. Churches also have the option to become WAVEmakers where best practice and challenges can be shared with other members in our network.
Resources
A space that is close to public transport, welcoming and accessible with step-free access, wide doorways, accessible toilets, and clear signage throughout.
Breakout or calm rooms with seating options: chairs, sofas, beanbags, floor cushions, and standing spaces.
People
4-6 volunteers required with the following gifts ideally:
- Team admin/planning;
- Creativity (craft/drama/music);
- Hospitality;
- Bible teaching (if running WAVE worship);
- Learning disability knowledge/experience/connection
