Creative English helps refugees and migrants find a place of belonging and community in the UK through making friends, improving English language skills, building confidence and increasing understanding of systems and services in a fun and enjoyable way.
"I used to rely on my husband for everything, but now I can make appointments and talk to the doctor and get someone to fix the boiler. I can look after my family, not feel like I am a child myself."

Activity

In the standard programme, volunteers will run 2-hour sessions using drama, games and activities in the supplied session plans, using the resource kit provided. The methodology is similar in the online version of the programme, but sessions only last 60 minutes.

Time

Training for the standard programme takes 2 days and for the online sessions there are two x 2-hour online sessions. Facilitators spend 2 hours a week delivering the session and around half an hour preparing, including reading the session plan and setting up/down the space. Online sessions are shorter, only taking 1 hour to deliver and 15 mins prep.

Cost

For the standard programme, set up costs are £1,500 for training, resource kit, support and licence for one year. Also £400 for continuity licence with kit refresh and refresher training. During the pandemic, you can buy the online training, resources and support for £300. The cost can be deducted from the standard programme cost, if you later choose to upgrade. You may want to allow for refreshments, flipchart/whiteboard & photocopying.

Partnership

Churches will need connections with potential beneficiaries and/or a willingness to make connections. Training and supporting resources are available to help with this.

Support

Creative English provide session plans, a resource kit and supporting documents to enable you to deliver the programme. As well as the training, all churches receive ongoing support from the Creative English team.

Resources

For the standard programme, you will need a space where you can put chairs in a circle, with enough space for your participants to move around when playing characters in the scenarios or games. For the online version, you need a Zoom account or similar platform.

People

A recommendation of 2 volunteers to run a group. Training is for a team of up to 5 people, to give the options of a larger team, running more than one group or having some f lexibility if someone is not available. They need to be confident speaking English and willing to have a go, leading or supporting the leader of the sessions.
